For the second time in our counts’ history,
we had to change the date of the count because of inclement
weather. We had a large group ready to go on our scheduled date,
but with the close proximity to Christmas, many were not able to
participate on the “snow date” of December 22nd. Many thanks go
out to Dick Bartlett, Mona Bearor, Beth, Brad, and son Nathan Bidwell,
Jason Goldsmith (especially for all his time looking for owls), Greg
Greene, Russ Hilliard, and Joan Robertson, for their dedication and day
in the field. We had a great count with many highlights. |

| Ruddy Duck, Redhead, and
Fish Crow are three species new to our count—we’ve been counting since
1983—and they have been flagged as unusual species. Here is
the list of birds that were spotted that day and night. |

The 106th Christmas Bird Count was conducted on December 18,
2005 in relatively good weather. There wasn't a lot of snow on
the ground but most of the open water was frozen. This definitely
affects the count with fewer ducks, gulls and geese. This year we
branched out into five teams instead of the usual four.
Development, especially in Queensbury, has made it difficult to
adequately cover the entire territory. Therefore we had teams
birding the areas of Hudson Falls, Fort Edward, Queensbury, South Glens
Falls, and the city of Glens Falls, logging in 392 miles. Many
thanks go out to our volunteer birders who spent an entire day counting
each and every bird. They are: Mona Bearor, Brad and Beth
Bidwell (their young son Nathan too), Joan Dobert, Gina Johnson, Russ
Hillard, Gerry and Lynn Lemmo, Barbara Putnam, Joan Robertson, Larry
Rowland (he is the new compiler for the Saratoga Springs count),
Jacquie Tinker, and Ginny Vogel. All their efforts were rewarded
with a total of 52 species and 11,426 individual birds. The
highlights of the count were the Peregrine Falcon, the Savannah
Sparrow, and the Pied-billed Grebe seen on the Hudson River not
far from the South Glens Falls Bridge. Please refer any questions
to compiler Linda White.
