Volunteers to tidy up part of Mohawk, hike-bike trail

SCHENECTADY - In honor of the 10th National Trails Day, outdoors enthusiasts are holding events today to clean up the hike-bike trail and a portion of the Mohawk River.

The Schenectady chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club and the Friends of the Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail are meeting at 9 a.m. at the Seneca Street entrance of the trail. The street connects with Maxon Road and Van Vranken Avenue.

They will work on cleaning up the city portion of the trail toward the intersection with Anthony Street.

Those two groups will be picking up trash, sweeping, raking and cutting back branches.

The chapter will provide refreshments. People need only bring tools and work gloves.

The Preserves and Trails Subcommittee of the Schenectady County Environmental Advisory Council is also organizing a cleanup.

The event is from 9 a.m. until noon. They will clean the hike-bike trail from the entrance at Schenectady County Community College and work west along I-B90.

After the trail cleaning events, the Adirondack Mountain Club is holding a barbecue at Byron Park in Indian Lake.

The Albany Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club is also holding its fourth annual Mohawk River cleanup.

The event is from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The group will meet at Lions Park in Niskayuna.

People are encouraged to bring their canoes or kayaks and go out on the river to clean up trash on the water and along the shores. People can also walk the shores.
