Accessing the Big Online Services From The Internet

If AOL or CompuServe are your thing, but they a long distance phone call, fear not, you can get there from here.

According to AOL customer support:

"Info on how to connect to AOL via the net is available in the internal help file HELP. Basically you just change the location page (under setup) to use TCP/IP as the network type instead of AOLnet or Sprintnet. Connect to the provider, and sign on AOL."

According to CompuServe customer service:

If a CompuServe member would like to access the service via the Internet, but does not have access to any of our software, the member may telnet to gateway.compuserve.com. At the "Host Name:" prompt, enter "CIS" (without the quotes), then press . Logon instructions should appear onscreen.

If a member has appropriate versions of our software for Microsoft Windows(tm) or for the Macintosh(tm), the member may logon through the Internet with a few minor modifications to the settings. The CompuServe Information Manager(r) for Windows(tm) - WinCIM(r) version 2.0.1 or later will be necessary to logon to the service in a Windows 3.1 environment. The relevant settings are found in the Session Settings selection in the Special pull-down menu. Set Network to Internet. Set Dial Type to Direct. Make sure that Use Winsock is selected. Press OK, then start your Internet dialer. Once the dialer has established a PPP connection to your ISP, WinCIM should be able to ride the connection to the service. If a member is using WinCIM under Windows 95 or later, the steps remain the same.

If a member is using the new CompuServe 3.01 program under Windows 95 or Windows NT, the location of the settings is not quite the same. Pull down the Access menu, and select Preferences. On the General tab, set Winsock: to Default WINSOCK. Set Dial Type: to Direct. Set Network: to Internet. Press OK. Once the PPP connection is established to your ISP, CompuServe 3.0 will be able to ride the connection to the service.
