There is no extra charge for business use. Most Internet services make a distinction between "personal" and "business" accounts and charge businesses more. We don't make any distinction and charge everyone the same.
We provide some additional (free) features for business websites. Users intending to use their web space for business should see our page on using your NetHeaven Website for business to learn how to take advantage of these features. Do this before planning your business Website!
HTML is normal text with some special formatting instructions inserted; it can be written with a simple text editor. However, most people now use special Web page creation tools or the web page editors built into some browsers.
While it helps to know something about HTML, the purpose of this page isn't to teach you to write pages. There are plenty of places to learn about HTML, including lots of information on the Web itself, for example
Because DOS displays all names in upper case, some upload tools automatically convert upper case DOS names to lower case. However, some others, especially more recent tools, will upload lower case only if the name is typed in lower case. You may have to experiment some to get the uploaded case right, but begin right now typing every name in lower case, for both files and directories (folders).
Also, do not use filenames with spaces in them. (Mac users tend to be fond of filenames with spaces.)
[Addendum: if you are uploading from off the NetHeaven network, such as by using a DSL or cable internet connection, your site must be made reachable from off our network (contact us for this) and you will need to FTP to wwwx.netheaven.com (note the 'x').]
Real FTP will give you access to your own directory, allowing you to manage it, including uploading and deleting files and directories.
Note: In your directory is something named "public_html". Depending on what FTP program you view it with, it may look like a file or like a directory. Do not delete "public_html". Without it your website will not work.
If you are using Netscape Composer to compose and publish your pages, see our separate publish instructions for Netscape Composer.
If you uploaded a file foo.htm into your directory, the URL (Web address) for that file is
Special note on "~username"
The ~ is not used in English, so it is unfamiliar to many users. It is used in mathematics and in some languages, Spanish for example. It's properly called a tilde, but it's commonly just called a squiggley. It's on your keyboard, in the upper left, next to the numeral 1.
On computers, "~username" has been used to refer to the home directory of a user since the early 1980s. The Web adopted this notation to refer to the home page of a user. As something unfamiliar and of uncertain pronunciation, it is not appropriate for business Web pages, so we provide a free alternative for business use. See our page on using websites for business.
Weekly referral and hit reports for your web pages
For an additional charge of $5/month (or as a perk of premium membership),
weekly reports analyzing your web pages can be emailed to you. See this
sample report to understand how this info might help you.
Interactive maps: The usual "imagemap" program is also in /cgi-bin. See the simple map example.
Counters: A text-based counter is available on our server. Click here to see how you can implement a counter on your page.
Custom CGI programs Users can run their own CGI programs using the cgiwrap wrapper. Since CGIs are programs that run on our server, they have security implications, and we reserve the right to disable/remove any CGIs that we feel pose a security threat to us or our users.
Also, once again, there is no extra charge for business use of your NetHeaven Website.
