Configuring for NetHeaven Dialup
For most users, NetHeaven dialup can be most easily configured by running
the Internet Setup Wizard of Window 95/98 and entering our appropriate
dialup access number (see NetHeaven
Access Numbers ) , your username, and perhaps our DNS servers.
We normally walk new users through a configuration as part of their account
setup.
This page is for users who want to do their own configuration, or who
want to understand better, or who want to speed up their login.
DNS Servers
Most dialup software can obtain the Domain Name Service
IP addresses from our network access servers during the login process,
but specifying them can speed up the login process. However, specifying
them in backwards order can make the login process very slow.
Primary Nameserver: 198.69.28.2
Alternate Nameserver: 198.69.28.3
DNS servers translate the names people use (such as "www.netheaven.com")
into the numbers (IP addresses) that computers use to find each other on
the Internet.
Note: a server is a computer running special software to provide
a network service such as domain name lookups, email, websites, login,
etc. Actually, to the fussy, "server" really refers to the software,
or rather to a running instance of the software called a process ... ah,
nevermind ... just remember that "server" doesn't refer to a company.
NetHeaven is an Internet service provider (ISP), but we're not a server.
Username
Your username is not your name! Your username
is a special short name used to identify you. You chose it when
you opened your membership. It can have only lower-case letters and
numbers in it. (The special POP3 usernames used with mail
can also have dots ["."'s] in them.)
Your username might be "john7", but it cannot be "John"
or "John Smith". When you enter it, make sure there is no space before
it or at the end of it. A space is a real character to a computer
- "john" is not the same as "john ".
Your username also cannot have "@" in it. Only email
addresses have "@" in them. Your username is usually part
of your email address, but they are different concepts.
Your username also cannot have "http:" in it. Only the
addresses of websites have "http:" as part of them.
Mail
Our incoming and outgoing mail servers are the same.
Incoming mail (POP3) server: mail.netheaven.com
Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: mail.netheaven.com
For the great majority of our users, your POP3 username and
POP3 password are the same as your network login username
and password.
For example, if your username (network login name) is "thunder":
POP3 username: thunder
Email address: thunder@netheaven.com
If you are using a mailbox with a name different from your network
login name, then your POP3 username is your mailbox's name.
You may want to read our mailboxes
page.
News (Usenet)
Our news server is
News (NNTP) server: news.netheaven.com
Do not configure any news username or password. If
your news programs asks if you're sure you want to leave them blank, tell
it you're sure.
